The Des Moines Register on Dec. 12, 1943, announces the first Iowa Poll, perhaps its most enduring feature. Established with advice from native Iowan George Gallup, founder of the Gallup Poll, "The poll will measure public opinion on questions of special importance in Iowa, and will poll only residents of this state," the Register writes. More than 80 years later, that remains the policy of the poll. It's the first state opinion poll established by an American newspaper and is the nation's oldest continuously operated state poll.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
