The Register reports on Feb. 22, 1950, that Iowans flocked to stores to watch as Iowa State University-owned TV station WOI becomes the first in Iowa to go on the air. "One thing was certain. Everyone seemed to agree that television was like the horseless carriage ― definitely here to stay," it writes, and uses the occasion to launch its own television section. Three years later, the Register and Tribune will join the new medium, launching KRNT-TV. ISU eventually sells WOI to a commercial broadcasting network, and KRNT, spun off as part of a separate company, will become today's KCCI.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
