The eyes of the world are on Iowa as deep in the throes of the Cold War, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev makes a visit to tour its farms, claiming his nation will soon rival the state in corn production. The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. The excursion follows a Pulitzer-winning 1956 editorial by the Register's Lauren K. Soth inviting a Soviet delegation to come to Iowa to study its agriculture.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
