DES MOINES, Iowa- The flowers on the agave ovatifolia at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden are officially opening.

Around a month ago , we first introduced you to the death bloom.

This agave takes around 10-15 years to bloom and wen it does, it puts on a show. It’s 15-foot stem sprouted around two months ago, and the flowers started to open around a week ago. They open and wilt from the bottom up.

Horticulturists say the whole plant dies just one or two days after the last flower blooms, and very few buds are left on the plant.

The garden is projecting around two more weeks with this agave before the entire plant dies.

People can visit the agave at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden Tuesday through Sunday. These are their new summer hours:

    • Tuesdays: 10 AM to 7 PM
    • Wednesdays – Fridays: 10 AM to 5 PM
    • Weekends: 9 AM to 4 PM
    • Mondays: Closed

Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and veterans, $9 for children ages 2-12, and free for anyone younger.
