Barkee LaRoux provides love and care for unwanted senior dogs
"I've loved animals ever since I was a child," says Carlynne McDonnell. "I grew up in Houston, where there was this amazing vet. I would find animals that had been hit by a car, or whatever, that were still alive. I would put them in my car and take them to the vet." ...

He was at the Mud People Festival for the first time since 2016 when he made this extraordinary photo. Here’s what he had to say about the shot.
The Indy Endorsement: The Overstuffed Bacon and Eggs at Shorebird
Why: It’s a unique twist on a classic treat. Ah, the deviled egg. It’s an all-American appetizer classic—a staple at potlucks and summer barbecues across the country. But you’ve almost certainly never seen deviled eggs like the ones on the menu at Shorebird, a newer “coastal” restaurant located at The Shops on El Paseo. These overstuffed eggs are tall, stacked with a swirled mixture of egg, celery, bacon, chives and paprika. Additionally, each of the four pieces is affixed to the plate with yet more of that egg mixture.

The red carpet was recently rolled out for middle school students at Palm Springs Unified School District, thanks to its inaugural Young Creators Student Film Program. Over eight days this summer, the young filmmakers produced 25 short films in total, which culminated in a massive premiere on Thursday morning at the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City.
Desert Dreamers 12: The Illustrators
In the middle decades of the last century, a group of illustrators captured the ethos of Palm Springs so effectively that their work continues to resonate — and circulate — today. Beyond the pen, they were fine artists and cartoonists, sculptors and muralists, businesspeople and raconteurs, iconoclasts and pillars of the community.
The Indy Endorsement: The 5-Alarm Panini at Play Lounge
Where: Play Lounge and Café, 2825 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs. Why: It’s an addictive breakfast sandwich. I’ve been trying to eat just one meal a day in recent weeks—it’s time for me to lose some weight, alas—and for work and social reasons, that one meal is usually dinner.

Agua Caliente Cultural Museum: Land Acknowledgement In Built Form
The desert city of Palm Springs is renowned for the mid-century modern architecture that blossomed there as the area became a quick getaway for the Hollywood movie stars looking to escape the tight studio grip and the tabloid media of the 1940’s and 50’s. But way before the arrival of the Rat Pack crowd and their dry martini cocktail fueled lifestyle, Palm Springs was the home of the Cahuilla people, who had inhabited the area for hundreds of years. Now, with the opening last year of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum in the heart of the city, that important Native American legacy will be both preserved and celebrated!

Youth-Driven Rock: The Academy of Musical Performance Celebrates 10 Years of Education With the Annual AMP Summer Camp
Youth-led musical projects are packing local venues—and a large number of those young rockers have the Academy of Musical Performance to thank. The Academy of Musical Performance, known as AMP, is a music-education program based in downtown Indio. Students ages 8 through 18 go through a number of musical-learning environments—most notably, AMP’s Rock Band program. Students are placed in bands, and while learning more about playing and creating music, they learn cover songs and perform them in their assigned band.
The Craft Mocktail Trend and Where to Order in Greater Palm Springs
They may look like rum-laden Tiki drinks, but the Ginger Colada and Hibiscus Collins from Bar Cecil in Palm Springs contain no alcohol. Cheers!. When is a drink not a drink but still a drink? When it’s a mocktail. Despite the slightly cringey moniker (the “mock” in “mocktail” makes it sound like a poor imitation of a “real” cocktail), today’s nonalcoholic creations are unique, creative, and just plain tasty. No shade on the Shirley Temple, but these aren’t hasty combos of juice, soda, and industrial-strength grenadine. These are drinks you savor. After all, bartenders are in the business of making customers happy, and when it comes to alcohol-free offerings, business is booming.
Marilyn, Oh Marilyn…Where Art Thou Marilyn?
For now, Forever Marilyn continues to shine in the heart of Museum Way. And possibly she’ll be there for awhile. We won’t say forever, because forever is quite a long time. But the Palm Springs Planning Commission has voted unanimously in favor of vacating Museum Way permanently, and...
