    Tigers’ Opening Day, Detroit Zine Fest and more things to do this week

    Happy April to you, Detroit! This week, celebrate the arrival of spring, complete with rainy days and a near total solar eclipse next week.

    On tap for the weekend: Tailgating at the Tigers’ home opener on Friday, then popping over to Eastern Market to shop the annual All Things Detroit Day before making a pit stop to kick off National Poetry Month at Next Chapter Books. Read on for fun things to get you out and about!

    Thursday

    🎤 Turn over a new leaf by preparing a 5-minute story based on the theme “Green” for the Moth StorySlam at Marble Bar tonight! Enter your name no later than 10 minutes before showtime for a chance to step into the limelight. Not a fan of the stage? Sit back and hear your fellow Detroiters tell true, personal stories. It’s sure to entertain! $15. Advance purchases encouraged to secure your seat.

    💛 Grease up your green thumbs and help bring spring to life with us here at Outlier! Join us for our volunteering event with Keep Growing Detroit . We’ll be helping the nonprofit with spring planting at its farm, so bring some clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. 😉 Free.


    This weekend

    ⚾ Root for the home team at the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day tailgate party on Friday! This event at Grand Circus Park includes food trucks, cornhole, giant TV screens for game-viewing, prizes and giveaways. Free.

    💡 Make some positive life changes through one-on-one coaching at Eastside Community Network’s Building a Better You program . Set goals and gain resources to become a better version of you! If you have it all together already, consider signing up for the coaching program . Heading to the game instead? Not to worry. This event recurs on Fridays through November. Free for Stoudamire Wellness Hub members; annual membership is $0-$20.

    🛣️ Explore how Detroit got its “Motor City” moniker on the Motor City Origins Tour at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum in Milwaukee Junction, Friday evening. Tickets include happy hour drinks, a tour of the car manufacturing plant and a chance to view a special historic automobile collection. $25 for members, $30 for non-members.

    📖 Wind down from opening day and soak up Friday Night Poetry Vibes at Next Chapter Books on the eastside. Local writers MARS , Brittany Rogers and Tommye Blount will share their work. Free.

    🧘🏽‍♀️ Grab your mat and head to The Congregation in Boston-Edison Saturday morning for a yoga class . It begins at 9 a.m. on the lower level. Grab a coffee in the café upstairs and gab with your new yoga buddies afterward! Free; donations encouraged.

    📚 Peruse zines (self-published mini-books), stickers and other handmade creations on Saturday at Detroit Zine Fest at The Jam Handy in Milwaukee Junction. Shop from over 80 local makers and grab lunch at the Hero or Villain food truck. Free.

    🎨 Make your own poetry-inspired art on Saturday at the Detroit Public Library Wilder Branch for Poetry & Painting . You’ll listen to poetry and create your own painting inspired by what you hear. Free.

    📽️ Enjoy 90 minutes of animated films by local and international artists at Detroit International Festival of Animation on Saturday evening at the Senate Theater. Films may have mature content, so the festival recommends an 18+ audience. $10.

    💅 Strut on over to HopCat in Midtown on Sunday for Michigan Drag Brunch , a showcase of drag performers who will dazzle and delight you while you dine, honey! Tickets include a welcome beverage, full meal and two hours of performance. There are two seating times to choose from until spaces fill up. $45.

    🛒 Shop local on Sunday at the 10th All Things Detroit Day . Founded by Jennyfer Crawford-Williams , the event will take place in Eastern Market with DJs, food trucks, a make-your-own-candle bar by Scent Science and a coloring wall by The Coloring Museum. $5 general admission, $10 for early admission to get first dibs on Detroit-made merchandise.


    Next week

    👓 View the solar eclipse during the Solar Eclipse Watch Party in Cullen Plaza on Monday afternoon, hosted by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. The near-total eclipse over the city will start at 1:58 p.m. and reach 99% totality at 3:14 p.m. The conservancy will give out protective eclipse-viewing glasses while supplies last and serve eclipse-themed snacks like Sun Chips and Moon Pies — how cute is that?! Free.

    🎶 Immerse yourself in beautiful melodies and harmonies at Singers in the Round on Tuesday evening at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe in Greektown. The lineup includes singers Celeste Allison , Kaitlyn Fox , Sage Castleberry , Rebekah Jon and Aidan Rockwell who will perform their original music in what is known as a Nashville writers’ round-style showcase! Intrigued? Us too. $10.
