With extension secured, Jared Goff 'would love' to finish his career in Detroit

Jared Goff got a big payday this week . To the tune of four years, $221 million, he has become the highest paid Lions player in franchise history.

But when negotiations began on a new deal this offseason, he wasn’t necessarily looking to get the most value out of his contract. He wanted security.

Goff spoke Thursday morning at a press conference in Allen Park, saying he was more concerned about getting a no-trade clause in his contract than maximizing his pay value.

Moments after stepping off the podium Goff called in to 97.1 The Ticket’s “Karsch and Anderson,” confirming that he is committed to finishing his career in Detroit.

“I would love for that to be the case and I think that was the main thing going into the contract stuff, was creating that security and that commitment from both my side and the team side. They were both committed to it from the get go and it was just a matter of time hammering out the details and getting us to the right spot with the numbers,” Goff said.

Goff’s extension comes months after leading the Lions to their first-ever NFC North Division title and a trip to the NFC Championship for the first time in three decades. He threw for 4,575 passing yards (2nd in the NFL) and 30 touchdowns (4th in the NFL) last season.

The progression seen throughout Goff’s time in Detroit — from three wins to narrowly missing the playoffs to being one half of football away from the first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history — has Lions fans dreaming of winning a Super Bowl; something many thought may never be the case.

And Goff says that’s certainly the team’s goal.

“Our standards continue to rise and our internal expectations have always been that. I don’t think that’s wavered,” Goff said on The Ticket. “But I think the focus and the intensity of even like right now in March and April has been ticked up a little bit. Guys know what we’re looking at, guy know who’s on the team, we know what positions everyone’s in, we know what everyone’s role is and we know what the ultimate goal is and everyone’s falling in line and knows where to be and how to get there.”

As the Lions hype continues to build — especially after Wednesday night’s official schedule release — Goff called this “an exciting time.”

    But nothing is a given.

“There’s still a ton of work to do. By no means will we show up in Week 1 and be the same team that we were last year at the end of the year. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get to that point and we know that and that is the challenge and also the fun part,” Goff said.

While we’re still well over 100 days away from the start of the season, the work is already underway. Goff said he’s been spending time with teammates working out in Allen Park and is anxious to get to work with the new additions to the team.

The Lions — who ranked in the top five of just about every offensive category last season — made it a priority to bolster the defense this offseason, drafting a pair of cornerbacks in Alabama's Terrion Arnold and Missouri's Ennis Rakestraw, as well as adding CB Amik Robertson, DT D.J. Reader, and DE Marcus Davenport.
