Should Lions entertain 'sneaky smart' trade for Robert Woods?

If the Lions make another impactful move this offseason, wide receiver feels like the position to target. Could Robert Woods be the guy?

Karsch says that "this might be one of those subtle, sneaky, smart deals -- if Jared Goff says, ‘Oh, hell yeah.’"

Woods was teammates with Goff for four seasons in Los Angeles, two of which saw him exceed 1,000 yards. But the most recent of those was five years ago. Woods spent last season with the Texans, catching 40 passes for 426 yards and a touchdown. Given Houston's depth at receiver, ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently said that Woods will likely be "the odd man out" and that the Lions should trade for him . He's scheduled to make $6.25 million this season with a $9.7 million cap hit.

Barnwell says that "the Texans wouldn't get much more than salary relief and a swap of Day 3 picks, but if former Rams executive Brad Holmes -- who's now Detroit's GM -- could persuade Woods to take a pay cut down to the $1.5 million range, a trade here could benefit both parties."

Karsch is on board, assuming Goff approves: "I look at this and say, OK, let’s start with where he had some of his more productive seasons. It was in Los Angeles, with the Rams, and who was his quarterback? Jared Goff. Last year, Josh Reynolds for the Lions had 40 catches on 64 targets. Robert Woods for the Texans had 40 catches on 75 targets.

"For a price tag that I would imagine is next to nothing, there are some variables here where I think this is one of those deals where you can say to Jared Goff, 'Hey, how much did you like throwing to this guy? Can he play the Josh Reynolds role for this one season if we can get him for next to nothing?' On top of that, if it doesn’t work out, no big deal."

Gator isn't as interested, given that Woods is on the wrong side of 30 and hasn't been the same player since tearing his ACL midway through the 2021 season: "He’s 32 years old, he’s four years past his last productive season, hurt his ACL in middle of 2021 and he’s just been a supporting cast member since then — which is what you would want for the Lions, I guess. But is he an upgrade over what they have?

"Donovan Peoples-Jones is still young, I want to see that. Kalif Raymond, I want him to get the opportunities. And I don’t know what they have in Antoine Green. It’s not a big enough wow-move for me to say, you gotta get this guy. And I’m not trading for him. If he’s going to be released, wait for him to get released and then you can make your offer -- if that’s what you want.

"Because the Lions have done what they’ve done, what they’ve built is a culture where players want to come here and play for this coach. So are we worried that he’d hit free agency and someone else would sign him? I’m not worried about that -- but I don’t want to sign him. There are too many things to against it. North of 32? Absolutely no."
