According to The New York Post’s Larry Brooks , the Rangers are working on a trade to send captain Jacob Trouba to the Detroit Red Wings.

It was reported by ESPN’s Emily Kaplan that Chris Drury met with Trouba to discuss his future with the team and now things seem to be picking up.

“Indeed, a well-placed source has told The Post that GM Chris Drury is working on a deal to send the captain to the Red Wings, a trade that the Michigan native would presumably accept after having played as a freshman for the Wolverines in 2012-13,” Brooks wrote.

“We are told the Rangers may retain $2.5 million per year on the two remaining seasons of Trouba’s $8M annual cap charge. That represents 31.25 percent retention that would also be applied to the $12M in salary Trouba has coming over the next two seasons.”

The Rangers are reportedly trying to clear cap space ahead of the start of the free agent period on July 1, hence why they are attempting to move Trouba.

Trouba’s no-move clause will change to a 15-team no-trade clause on July 1, which will allow New York to trade him.

While the Rangers will still most likely be forced to retain some of Trouba’s salary in any sort of package, getting value for the team’s captain is something that is a better alternative to waiving or buying out his contract.

This past season, the 30-year-old defenseman had three goals,19 assists and 22 points.
