It was not to be for High School golf sensation Miles Russell on his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week, as the 15-year-old missed the cut in Detroit.

Despite failing to make the weekend, it was 36 holes to remember for the teenager, who put in an impressive performance in front of the Detroit crowd on Thursday and Friday. Russell's week ended at level-par through two rounds, missing the halfway cut by four shots.

After a two-over-par 74 in round one on Thursday, the 15-year-old showed exactly why he is one of golf's hottest prospects 24 hours later, carding a superb two-under 70 in round two, which included four birdies.

At one stage of his second round, Russell found himself four-under through 11 holes, thanks to birdies at the first, fourth, seventh and 11th on Friday. Two bogeys on his way back in however dragged his score back ever so slightly, confirming his Tour debut would come to an end before the weekend.

With an experienced head on his shoulders, the teenage amateur gave a professional assessment of his second round efforts in the aftermath. "I Got off to a nice start and just wasn’t quite able to keep it going, but just needed a couple more putts to drop,” Russell said.

“The game plan today was same as yesterday, just try to execute better. Did that early, just couldn’t get any putts to fall on that back side.” Russell teed it up alongside some of the biggest names on the PGA Tour, with the likes of defending champion Rickie Fowler in the field, as well as Will Zalatoris, Tom Kim and Cameron Young.

Reflecting on his first experience on Tour, the teenager commented: "It's pretty perfect. I mean, the only PGA Tour event I've been to is The Players and I think that's probably one of the best ones, so it was right up there with it. It was awesome. I mean, the fans here.

"Especially in Detroit, have been great and looking forward to coming back in a month or so. It was just a cool moment." As Russell alluded to, he will make the trip back to Detroit next month when he tees it up at Oakland Hills Country Club in the coveted 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur.

On offer will be a spot in next year's U.S. Open at Oakmount Country Club. Looking ahead at the test that faces him at Oakland, he said: "I think it might be a little firmer, a little faster, rough might be a little thicker, might be a little bit more of a championship-style course. I think the rough's going tobe probably five, six inches and pretty thick. I think the key's going to be keeping it in the fairway."
