Lions Are 'Legit Super Bowl Contender,' Rival Scout Says

Last year, the Detroit Lions came up just short of making their first trip to the Super Bowl in franchise history.

They may have been one of last year's biggest surprises after barely missing the postseason in 2021, but they won't be sneaking up on anyone this time around.

"Dan Campbell’s influence is obvious all over this roster," a rival scout told Athlon Sports for this year's NFL preview magazine , on sale at newsstands now. "His hard-nosed mentality defines this team. ... The teamwork between Campbell and Holmes drives this bus. The Lions are a legit Super Bowl contender.”

The Lions' crushing loss to the San Francisco 49ers in last year's NFC title game could be a tough mental hurdle for Campbell's team to overcome, but they have the foundation on both sides of the ball to make another deep playoff run in 2024.

“Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has done a great job with Jared Goff, transforming his confidence and efficiency," a rival scout raved about the Lions offense. "The play-calling expertise is a huge plus for Detroit. ... They’ve got one of the top wide receivers in the NFL in Amon-Ra St. Brown. ... I still think Jameson Williams is going to be a big factor this year. ... Sam LaPorta was a great draft pick by general manager Brad Holmes. ... Penei Sewell is about the only right tackle in the NFL that’s in the class of Lane Johnson. ... Frank Ragnow is one tough customer at center."

On defense, the Lions have some impact players returning, and also make some big additions in the offseason, both through free agency at the 2024 NFL draft.

"The decision to draft Aidan Hutchinson keeps paying dividends. His all-out style makes this defense go. ... Gotta say, the linebacker group is rock-solid with Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes. ... Signing D.J. Reader gives this defense a real two-gapping presence. He’s massive and hard to move. ... Hard to find a better young safety tandem than Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. ... Drafting Terrion Arnold fixes one corner spot. Carlton Davis III is another story altogether. He’s been shaky lately. ... I like the depth they added with Ennis Rakestraw Jr."

Any team that has made it close to the top of the mountain without bringing home the ultimate prize will tell you how hard it is to get back.

But if any NFL team is capable of building on last year's success and being an even better version of themselves in 2024, it's a well-coached and talented group like the Lions, who have clearly embraced the culture and example set by the coaching staff, front office and loyal fan base.
