Former No. 1 Overall Pick Spencer Torkelson’s New Look Is Turning Heads

The Detroit Tigers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball since the calendar flipped to July.

Winners of 12 of their last 16 games, the Tigers are slowly making up ground in the surprisingly competitive AL Central - and they've done so without the help of former No. 1 prospect, Spencer Torkelson.

The top pick of the 2020 MLB Draft, Torkelson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on June 2. The former Arizona State slugger struggled out the gate for Detroit in 2024, hitting .201 with just four home runs and 56 strikeouts in 54 games.

Torkelson, unfortunately, hasn't fared much better during his most recent stint in Triple-A. Through his first 35 games in Toledo, he's hitting just .232 with a .730 OPS.

With that said, it seems that Torkelson is experimenting with something new at the Triple-A level. The change, however, isn't what you might expect.

"Let no one say Spencer Torkelson isn’t trying something different in Toledo…" TigersMLReport's Chris Brown posted to X.

The typically clean-shaven Torkelson is now sporting a mustache - and while the new look has drawn mixed reviews, some fans were surprised to see the former No. 1 overall pick still down in Triple-A.

Tigers fans are certainly eager for Torkelson to turn things around and regain his form.

Detroit is 49-50 and currently 5.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the American League.
