Game notes: It’s officially trade deadline season with the Mariners (Randy Arozarena, Yimi García) and Orioles (Zach Eflin) buying and the Rays and Blue Jays selling. (Actually, the O’s are also sellers, shipping outfielder Austin Hays to Philadelphia for reliever Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Christian Pache.) Which side of that equation will the Tigers land on? And, more importantly, if (when) they do sell before Tuesday’s deadline, will lefty Tarik Skubal be headed to a contender ?

Before then, however, Skubal will make his third start of the season against the Twins. The first, on April 12 at Comerica Park, was a gem in which he allowed just two hits and two walks over five shutout innings while striking out five. The second, July 2 in Minneapolis, was less dazzling, as Skubal allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision.

He’ll face Joe Ryan, also making his third start this season against the AL Central rival from Motown (albeit his first since April). Something about the Tigers turns Ryan into a strikeout machine (even more so than usual); the 2023 All-Star, who averages 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings against non-Tigers, has a 12.2 K/9 rate when facing the Old English “D.” That includes a 12-strikeout performance in six innings on April 13 (in Minneapolis) and a six-strikeout game in 5 1/3 innings April 19 (in Detroit).

After tonight, the Tigers and Twins wrap up the series — and their season series, which entered Friday with the teams tied at 5 wins apiece — with a matinee featuring a TBA pitcher (Tyler Holton, anyone?) for the Tigers. The Tigers then zip into a two-game series against the Cleveland Guardians beginning Monday at Comerica Park.
