Only a pair of quarterbacks in the 2028 recruiting class have picked up Michigan offers. The number will surely grow exponentially over time, but among the two to hold the honor is Donald Tabron , out of powerhouse Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech.

“It feels good for the hard work he puts in to get noticed,” father Donald Tabron Sr. told The Wolverine earlier this summer. “I think that’s the biggest thing at this point. But again, I’m sure he feels great at the recognition that’s coming from the work he’s putting in.”

It’s common to observe U-M enter the mix early for local prospects living in the program’s vicinity, especially those from the largest city in the state and its suburbs. Donald is one of two 2028 targets native to Southeast Michigan who the reigning national champions have pulled the trigger on.

“It’s very exciting for the entire family, not just Donald,” Mr. Tabron said. “Most Detroiters grow up Michigan fans. Unless there’s some affiliation to Michigan State, from alumni or family, whatever the case may be. So, it’s always a dream come true to be recruited by the biggest in-state school. It’s very exciting.”

Keep in mind that Donald has yet to throw a pass at the high school level. His quarterback experience is also relatively brief compared to other signal-callers his age. He didn’t start slinging the ball until about four years ago. With further growth comes a higher ceiling, and that exciting to Donald’s father.

“He’s a hard worker,” Mr. Tabron said. “He does well academically and puts a lot of time and effort into his craft. If it’s not academics, he’s spending time working on his skill set. Doesn’t do a whole lot outside of that, so he’s pretty well-focused on his school work and then his training and workout regimen and all that. He spends a lot of time at it.”

Donald had visited Michigan twice before returning in June for a team-hosted camp inside Al Glick Field House. His outing in front of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbel l led to the offer.

“All of our experiences have been fantastic,” Mr. Tabron said. “The Big House barbecue (last year) was pretty cool. He got the chance to take a look at all the facilities, get a chance to put on the amazing blue uniforms and cleats and whatnot. So, that was a big experience for him. Through his few visits, he’s created a little friendship with Alex Orgi . So, every time he visits Michigan, he goes and looks for him, and they’ve got a pretty cool interaction going. He enjoys himself every time he pays a visit.”

Campbell’s recruiting efforts since being elevated on staff twice in the last 19 months continue to be celebrated. How he’s involved himself in building personal relationships with prospects and their families is harped on immensely by those individuals as well.

“Everyone has been fantastic thus far,” Mr. Tabron said. “Coach Campbell had fantastic conversations with us. (He and Donald) were able to talk football and speak the same language. That was fun to watch. My wife was able to visit (last month) as well as one of Donald’s grandmothers. So, we were welcomed with open arms.

“Campbell seemed to have a great football mind during the conversations that we had. I wasn’t able to be too close to the interactions during the camp, but my son’s feedback was that the interactions were really cool. He enjoyed throwing the ball for Coach Campbell as well as (head coach Sherrone) Moore , and he enjoyed every moment of it.”

Moore’s openness and availability on the June trip gave the family the impression that Michigan is in good hands moving forward.

“He seems to be a great guy from our interactions,” Mr. Tabron said. “Myself and my wife had good conversations with him after spring practice when we visited (in April), and we were able to have some additional good conversations (last month). All of my interactions thus far, I have nothing but great things to say about him.”

The Wolverines hold the early lead for Donald on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

At 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Donald is not yet listed on the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four primary recruiting media services. He holds other notable offers from Penn State, Auburn Michigan State, Maryland, Kentucky, and Marshall.

“The biggest thing at this point is just getting acclimated to his teammates and to the coaching staff (at Cass Tech), new system, new play schemes, and just do the best he can to compete,” Mr. Tabron said. “We have a mantra where as long as we cover all of our bases and do everything that we can do at that point, just let the chips fall where they may. We’ll make sure he’s very prepared for the competition, and hopefully, he’ll perform and be able to earn some field time. We shall see.”
