Ben Johnson took to the impressively large new podium in the Detroit Lions press room on Thursday morning. The Lions offensive coordinator opened with a short joke about his defensive counterpart, Aaron Glenn, and then got to offering some impressively large praise on Jameson Williams.

One of the unquestioned stars of Lions training camp, “Jamo” looks like a different person and player this summer. It’s something Johnson, who has been the OC since Williams was drafted in the first round in 2022, definitely notices on a daily basis.

After noting that Williams started to ascend as the 2023 season progressed, Johnson was unabashed in his praise of the third-year wideout.

“He’s taken it to another level in the springtime and so far here in camp,” Johnson said. “In the passing game making explosive plays but he also wants to be a dynamic blocker.”

One specific point Johnson zeroed in on with Williams is that, “his route tree has developed.”

That’s been readily evident throughout the offseason. The attention to detail and spacing in Johnson’s intricately timed and space passing sets has stood out with Williams. Johnson is a stickler for precision, and Williams has taken a massive leap in that regard.

Noting that “things are really slowing down for him,” Johnson offered this about Williams,

“So far we haven’t really seen anything that he can’t do.”
