On a day filled with fights, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones wasn't going to miss out on the fun.

Hosting the Detroit Lions for the first of two joint training camp practices Monday, there were a handful of fights and skirmishes that broke out in between plays.

The first fight came about an hour after practice started. It was a big scrum with several punches being thrown from both sides before cooler heads prevailed.

The second fight didn't last as long, but it had a unique element to it. Jones was right in the middle of it defending the recently signed Greg Van Roten after a play.

Quarterbacks don't typically get involved with training camp fights. They usually aren't allowed to be touched at all. Jones didn't care.

"A situation happens like that, you try to stand up for your guys. I thought it was good competitive practice all day today and we made some plays and did some good things," Jones told reporters. "There are some things we need to sure up, for sure, but good intensity and competitive spirit today."

Granted, Jones didn't throw a punch or anything like that. But he surely wasn't shying away from contact, and he certainly wasn't trying to break up the brawl.

Even despite wearing the red jersey, Jones was going to stick up for his teammates — even one he just met a few days ago . The red jersey stops others from hitting Jones, but he feels it shouldn't keep him from standing up for his teammates.

"I don't think it should," Jones said. "He's my teammate, and just like he would stick up for me, I'm
going to stick up for him

The Giants showed a lot of fight — both literally and figuratively. The Lions are known for being one of the most physical teams across the entire NFL, and the Giants didn't back down from the challenge.

There will be one more joint practice Tuesday morning before both teams square off for their preseason opener Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.
