The Fourth of July is right around the corner and everyone can’t wait for the fireworks display at the Cuero City Park. It will be beautiful, spectacular, exciting and SUPER LOUD. Kids from 2 to 92 are ready to “ooh” and “ahh '' but unfortunately our fourlegged friends suffer the most every Fourth of July. Pet Adoptions of Cuero is advising all pet owners of cats and dogs to be prepared.

July 5th is our “most called in” day of the year from families searching or inquiring about their lost or missing pet. Lots of new pets were adopted this year so this may be the first July 4th event they will be experiencing. New and “old” pet parents - please use these precautions to get ready for the extra NOISE your pet is not used to: Please keep your pet – no matter the size – indoors or in a secured enclosed space if at all possible. A fenced pen is not much of a barrier for a terrified pet and absolutely do not tie up or chain up your pet outdoors during a fireworks event.

Check with your vet for some calming meds to administer to your pet.

Have music or light background noise in the pets resting area as a distraction.

Provide extra toys or chewies as a distraction.

Make sure your pet has a collar and rabies and identification tags on at all times.

Take an up-to-date photo of your pet in case he/she escapes.

Make sure your pet is microchipped and has up-to-date owner records with the chip company.

Double and triple check your pet multiple times during the evening. A familiar, friendly calming face will be reassuring and welcome.

If the pet does escape in fear please post info immediately on the Facebook page: Cuero, TX Lost and Found Pets or other Facebook pages in your area.

Contact Pet Adoptions of Cuero 361-243-8550 and/or the City of Cuero Animal shelter to report your pet missing.

Everyone deserves a safe and happy July 4th – make sure it is one for FIDO and FELIX too!
