People often find their minds drifting away from the present moment, focusing on imperfections and challenges rather than positive aspects of their lives. Research indicates that the average person spends 50 to 80 percent of their time with wandering attention, contributing to increased stress and dissatisfaction.

    A study conducted by Dr. Sood's colleagues at the Mayo Clinic involved scanning patients' brains at rest, revealing that even in a state of inactivity, the brain remains incredibly busy. This constant activity reflects the brain's two modes: the focused mode and the default mode. The focused mode engages when processing something interesting, novel, or meaningful, while the default mode activates during routine tasks, leading to mind wandering.

    Dr. Sood found that spending too much time in the default mode correlates with higher risks of anxiety, depression, and attention deficits. The brain, designed to prioritize safety and survival, struggles to deliver peace and happiness in a modern context. This mismatch between evolutionary predispositions and contemporary needs is a significant source of human suffering.

    Another neural predisposition Dr. Sood identified is the focus on threats and imperfections. This negativity bias means that people often dwell on potential dangers and flaws, even when not immediately relevant. Additionally, hedonic adaptation causes individuals to become accustomed to positive experiences, diminishing their impact over time.

    To counter these tendencies, Dr. Sood developed a program that offers practical strategies for cultivating happiness. One key practice involves focusing on gratitude. Dr. Sood suggests starting each day by thinking of five people one is grateful for, helping to shift attention from worries to positive aspects of life. Another practice encourages intentionality in personal interactions, treating loved ones with the same interest and attention as long-lost friends.

    Dr. Sood also emphasizes the importance of reframing life's challenges using higher-order principles like gratitude, compassion, acceptance, meaning, and forgiveness. Individuals can create a balanced and fulfilling life by dedicating specific days to these principles.
