The dog days of summer are in full swing and beachgoers are flocking to the shores daily, prompting an important safety reminder from the Duxbury Fire Department on how to stay safe if caught in a rip current. "If you are going to the beach this weekend, remember these steps if you are caught in a rip current," they advised, with the following information:

If caught in a rip current...

    • Stay calm and don't fight the current.
    • Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once free, turn and swim toward shore.
    • If you can't swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are free of a rip current and then head toward shore.
    • If you feel you can't make it to the shore, draw attention to yourself by waving and calling for help.

As you enjoy the summer sun, take a moment to share these crucial safety tips with your friends and family. By educating others, you can help prevent dangerous situations and ensure everyone has a safe beach experience.
