Interlochen’s Crown Jewel: How a Northern Michigan Arts School Helped Forge a Pop Star
Pictured: Juel Kilcher, aka Jewel, at Interlochen Center for the Arts in the early 1990s. In the spring of 1992, an Alaskan teenager named Juel Kilcher walked across the stage at Kresge Auditorium and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. Four years later, she had a top-five album on the Billboard 200. On Monday, August 5, Kilcher—now known better by her mononymous stage name, Jewel—will take the stage at Kresge once more, this time for a sold-out, co-headlining show with Melissa Etheridge.

MANISTEE — The Manistee National Forest Festival kicked off Wednesday with lots of fun in store. For more than 80 years, the festival has been the signature event in Manistee County. This year, they predict the festival will attract 30,000 people. With shopping specials downtown, a carnival and other activities, it’s not hard to see why. “It’s such a great time for everyone in the community, because we will have so many businesses and organizations in town that choose to participate their own way, but we also have so many people that have never been to Manistee before that are coming just for this festival, and they get to enjoy our historic downtown and all of the beautiful sights that we have to offer,” said Blade Gates, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce.

Tustin Augustana church events for 150th anniversary
TUSTIN — Swedish descendants of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church founders in Tustin are planning events for their 150th anniversary. The celebration begins on Sunday, July 14 with a 9 a.m. service. Six former pastors will attend along with Pastor Sharon VanDam. Activities continue at 11 a.m. with a Swedish luncheon at noon.
Beverly Jean Regts
Beverly Jean Regts of Cadillac passed away Saturday morning, June 29, 2024, at her home, after an extensive and courageous battle with cancer. She was 68 years old. Bev was born November 19, 1955, in Zeeland, Michigan to William J. and Anna Mae (Driesenga) Aukeman. On July 23, 1977, she married John M. Regts who preceded her in death on November 18, 2001. Bev's life was a testament to the power of meaningful relationships, steadfast faith, inner reflection, and a commitment to being present and intentional in all of life's endeavors.
