For the second time in a matter of weeks, Wichita middle schools have found themselves grappling with the aftermath of students consuming edibles, leading to severe health issues. Monday's incident at Brooks Middle School has raised concerns about the potential dangers of these substances, especially when they fall into the hands of young individuals. To shed light on this issue, 12 News recently had the opportunity to speak with a knowledgeable Wichita pediatrician.

In both incidents at Brooks Middle School and Coleman Middle School last month, it remains unclear what these edibles contained—whether they were laced with THC, CBD, or other substances. The Wichita police are actively investigating the matter. However, Ascension Via Christi pediatrician Dr. Amy Seery stresses that, regardless of the specific content, the consumption of such substances is unequivocally detrimental to children.

Monday's alarming situation unfolded as four students at Brooks Middle School fell ill after ingesting these edibles, adding to the five students from Coleman Middle School's incident. Dr. Seery emphasizes that this is an escalating problem among young people.

Dr. Seery comments, "Because these cannabinoid or cannabinoid-related products, just like the THC in them, are kind of showing up everywhere in the market. We are seeing an increase in kids being exposed to these types of products."

It's crucial to understand that these edible products were not designed or intended for children. Dr. Seery elucidates the potential complications that can arise when young bodies are exposed to substances often dosed for larger, adult bodies. The spectrum of complications varies, with symptoms such as upset stomachs, vomiting, severe stomach cramps, and debilitating headaches.

However, without prompt medical intervention, the situation can deteriorate rapidly. Dr. Seery warns that "children will eventually stop breathing on some of these substances and can go into a coma or have a severe seizure."

Moreover, the long-term use of such substances can profoundly affect a child's future. Dr. Seery underscores, "If you're having that repeated exposure over time, it changes how your brain develops, how it thinks, how it functions, and can make you more prone to maybe more risky behaviors later on in life."

Preventing situations like the recent incidents at Wichita schools is paramount. Dr. Seery offers valuable advice to parents who suspect their child may have ingested something inappropriate. She urges, "If you think there is a risk that your child may have taken it, especially if there are symptoms, you should seek out immediate medical care."

The Wichita school district has confirmed that some students consumed edibles brought to the school by another student and has vowed consequences for those involved. The district encourages parents to have open conversations with their children about the potential risks associated with consuming unlabeled candy, as raising awareness is key to ensuring child safety in educational environments.
