(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — South suburban Dixmoor continues to be plagued by water main breaks, including several in the last few days. Village leaders say it will keep happening unless Dixmoor gets a lot of financial help.

Dixmoor village spokesman Travis Akin said one water main broke last Friday and was repaired. Then, over the next four days, Dixmoor crews had to fix at least eight more water main breaks.

“To have nine in a row to have a, you know, nine in less than a week. I mean, nobody plans for that and these costs are adding up. And it's gonna continue to be a problem until the long term solutions are in place,” Akin said.

Akin said Dixmoor needs to replace its aging water mains.

“What we are working on is putting together some information that will reflect kind of where we are: what projects have been done, what still needs to be done, and what those costs are. So we're working on getting that together,” Akin said.

He didn't have an exact cost, but he says it will be in the tens of millions of dollars.

Akin says Dixmoor doesn't have the money, so the village needs more financial help from the federal, state and county governments.
