A new study of the ten census-designated cities with 100,000 or more residents and high Latino populations showed their poverty rates are 50% higher than the national average. The ten communities, which include Laredo, Texas; East LA and Hialeah, Florida had an average poverty rate of 18.7%, considerably higher than the national poverty rate of 12.5% and the overall Latino poverty rate of 17.2%, the report by Axios shows.

Traffic alert: State Road 836 eastbound to close Saturday night in Miami
MIAMI – State and local officials dealing with construction on State Road 836 warned drivers that the eastbound lanes are set to close Saturday night in Miami. The planned closure at Northwest 17 Avenue starts at 11 p.m., Saturday, from Little Havana to Overtown, and ends at 9 a.m., Sunday. The ramp at Northwest 12 Avenue will also close. The eastbound detour is at Southwest First Street.

In the 1980s, Miami was a byword for violence. Drug cartels were murdering people. Tourists were targeted for robbery or worse, a trend so bad that the state of Florida changed its laws in the early 1990s in order to make it harder to identify who was a tourist by eliminating telltale license plates on rental cars. The eastbound lanes of part of the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) will be closed overnight this weekend, and drivers will need to take alternate routes, officials said. SR 836 will be closed at NW 17th Avenue from 11 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday and then again from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5:30 a.m. Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation said.
