As of May 2024, car thefts in Las Vegas have been increasing, with some models seeing a 1000% increase since 2020.

LV Metro Police reports nearly 11,000 car thefts in the Las Vegas Valley in the first nine months of 2023. In 2022, that number was about 7,600. That’s more than a 43% increase. A spokesperson for North Las Vegas Police Department said the city has also seen an uptick.

Some thefts can be attributed to popular social media videos showing how to exploit vulnerabilities in certain cars. Hyundai, Kia, and Honda models are among the most frequently stolen, although thieves target vehicles of all makes and models. Here is the list of the top 10 stolen cars in Las Vegas.

According to an analysis of 2023 car thefts compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, four Kia, two Hyundai, and two Honda models are among the top ten most stolen cars in the U.S.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) recommends locking your vehicle, rolling up your windows, and removing your keys to deter thieves from boosting your car.

NICB recommends the following tips to help prevent vehicle thefts:

    • Park in well-lit areas
    • Report a car immediately after it is stolen to increase the chance of recovery
    • Lock the door and close windows when you park
    • Use the glove box or trunk to keep valuables out of sight
    • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle
    • Do not leave while your car is running
    • If your vehicle is stolen, your insurer immediately

The LVMPD has a 75% recovery rate for stolen cars; most are recovered within seven days.

The Las Vegas Valley is similar to any other large metropolitan area, but with the addition of 40 million-plus tourists annually, the problem of stolen vehicles can be magnified.
