    Woman of the Year nominations are open

    DENNISON − The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum is accepting nominations for the 2024 Lucille Nussdorfer Award. Nussdorfer founded the Dennison Servicemen's Canteen that served 1.3 million soldiers during World War II.

    The award recognizes an outstanding woman who has made a significant and lasting impact through volunteerism in Tuscarawas County. Nominees will be narrowed down to five finalists. The awards ceremony will be held Oct. 16 at the Streetside Center, where the Tuscarawas County Woman of the Year will be announced.

    Nominations can be sent to Taylur Cunningham at taylurc@dennisondepot.org or visit the Dennison Depot or Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau for an application.

    Meeting has been rescheduled

    DOVER – The Board of Supervisors of the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District has rescheduled the 8 a.m. Aug. 13 board meeting to 8 a.m. Aug. 20. The meeting will be at the TSWCD office at 85 E. Iron Ave.

    Book sale is Saturday

    DOVER – A book sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Dover Library. DVDs, audiobooks, computers and furniture will also be available. All proceeds will benefit the library's sidewalk replacement project. A preview night for members of the Friends of the Library will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

    Moreland to share stories, recipes

    DOVER – Author Trang Moreland will be the speaker for the Lunch & Learn program at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. Moreland will talk about her life, her writing, and her new cookbook, I Am You: Vietnamese American Recipes. She will demonstrate how to use chopsticks and encourage participants to use them while they sample sone of her favorite recipes. Space is limited; attendees must register in advance with Linda at the Senior Center Library.

    Moreland immigrated to the United States from Vietnam at age 21. Prior to writing her cookbook, Moreland wrote the autobiography “Just Smile and Say Hello.” She is vice president of the Tuscarawas County Writers' Guild.

    Foresters to meet Wednesday

    DOVER – The East Central Ohio Forestry Association will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dover Public Library. Ryan Clester, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry Service forester, will present a program on the history and recent local increase in the prevalence of oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills native oak trees. Identification of the disease and control techniques will be included.

    Wilson to lead engineers group

    NEW PHILADELPHIA − Engineer Rodney Wilson of New Philadelphia was recently elected president of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE-Ohio). He will lead the legislative, educational and service activities for the engineering profession in Ohio. Wilson is also Ohio's new delegate to the National Society of Professional Engineers' House of Delegates.

    Wilson holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He is retired from both the Ohio Department of Transportation, District 11 (New Philadelphia), and W.E. Quicksall & Associates.

    Scio Summer Fest is this week

    SCIO – The 90th annual Scio Summer Fest will be held Wednesday through Saturday in the fire department's parking lot and old school lot.

    Activities include live music, a flower and garden show, bingo, visits by Bird Nerds and Exotic Birds, and from 5 to 8 p.m. viewing of exhibits at the Scio Museum. Kids' inflatables and rides will also be available. Wristbands are $12. Daily featured events include a fun run and 5K on Wednesday, cornhole tournament and cheerleaders at 6 p.m., parade at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and cloggers performance, arm wrestling, pet show, karaoke contest, duck race and crowning of royalty on Saturday.     Grant deadlines upcoming

    CANTON − The next deadline for grant applications to the Moomaw Foundation is Aug. 30. Grants will be awarded in September to qualified charitable organizations located mainly in Tuscarawas County, exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, and educational purposes.

    The next deadline for submitting grant requests to the Haman Family Foundation is Aug. 30 for grants to be awarded in September, mainly for capital improvement projects and equipment, and some programs and services.
