DOYLESTOWN, PA—Doylestown Borough is bracing for a long-awaited repaving project on one of its busy business corridors next week.

West State Street between Main Street and the five-point intersection at Clinton Street will be closed for milling and paving beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, July 22. The work is scheduled to go through Wednesday, July 24.

At this week’s Borough Council meeting on Monday night, Deputy Manager Phil Ehlinger said that because the work is being done by PennDOT, not borough workers, the street will be completely closed. Traffic will be detoured around the work zone.

“PennDOT does not necessarily work as flexibly as the public works department,” Ehlinger said. “They just shut down roads when they work on them, so State Street will be shut down for three days. It’s going to have a significant impact.”

That part of State Street is home to many of the borough’s restaurants and shops. It’s also a big source of on-street parking for visitors to the town.

Ehlinger gave a schedule for the work: Milling or chipping away the old roadway will take place on Monday, repaving will take place on Tuesday, and crews will seal cracks and joints on Wednesday.

Ehlinger said that borough workers will also use Wednesday to do line-painting for parking spots to avoid further closures on the road. “We’ll try to be as fast as possible and get that street back open,” he said.

Ehlinger noted that the borough has reached out to businesses that will be affected by the closure. To alert residents, the road will be marked as a no-parking zone in advance, and cars left parked on State Street past 6 a.m. on July 22 will be ticketed and towed.

The timing of next week’s repaving will be a little tricky because West Court Street, which runs next to State Street between Main Street and the five-point intersection, will also be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays for the rest of the month. West Court Street has been the site of utility work being done by PECO contractors on and off over the last several months.

Despite the daunting impact of closing such a main thoroughfare, borough officials are happy that the road is finally getting attention. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Borough Manager John Davis.

Davis said the borough owes thanks to State Rep. Tim Brennan and State Sen. Steve Santarsiero for their efforts in getting the state to repave the road. He also said that as soon as those two blocks of West State Street are repaved, the borough will work on getting PennDOT to come back for other repaving projects.

“We're not stopping with those two blocks,” Davis said. “We're all aware that there are lengthy sections of State Street east and west that still need attention.”
