An autopsy was pending Monday into the death of a man who allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend in Duarte and then fell unconscious during a subsequent struggle with another man who intervened in the attack.

Corey Alderson, 55, died in a hospital, according to the Medical Examiner's office.

Deputies were dispatched around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday to the 2500 block of Maynard Drive, south of Mount Olive Drive, where they found the victim unresponsive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's officials said Alderson initially confronted, then began assaulting his ex-girfriend, prompting another man -- who was acquainted with the estranged couple -- to intervene. The ex-boyfriend then retrieved a tire iron from his nearby vehicle.

"A struggle ensued between the two males for possession of the tire iron," according to a sheriff's statement. "The struggle resulted in the deceased male falling to the ground, and being subdued by the male resident, and the deceased male subsequently going unconscious."

The man who intervened was initially detained but was released pending additional investigation, sheriff's officials said.
