Controlled burn gets out of control in Duenweg

DUENWEG, Mo. (KOAM) — About 1 p.m. Wednesday reports of smoke and a large grass fire north part of town alerted Jasper County E-911.

Duenweg Fire and nearby Duenweg Police responded. Webb City Fire were requested as mutual aid.

LOCATED : Between Prosperity and Irwin, north part of Duenweg, closer to Newman Road.

We learn on arrival it’s a controlled burn that got out of control. There were no structures threatened but it was spreading rather quickly as the wind was pushing it.

Firefighters tell us although we aren’t in a drought, it’s still dry (like this field) and the winds are brisk and unpredictable. What began as 5 acres grew to burn about 25 acres they believe.

All fire departments ask you contact them before performing a controlled burn. Sometimes they are prohibited due to conditions or the availability of standby fire staff if the controlled burn gets out of control like today.
