Auburn University is the latest state college to announce the closing of its Office of Inclusion and Diversity, reports AL.com’s Rebecca Griesbach. Now five institutions have made or announced the move, just months after a new state law was signed by Gov. Kay Ivey that bans DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) programs. The law requires that colleges be in compliance with the law by Oct. 1.
New Bill Would Require Alabamians to Obtain Permit Before Carrying Assault Weapons
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A recently filed bill would require Alabamians to obtain a permit for carrying assault weapons, whether on their person or in their vehicle. House Bill 23, introduced by Rep. Kenyatte Hassell, D-Montgomery, defines an assault weapon as a semiautomatic rifle capable of accepting detachable magazines and possessing at least one of six specific features, such as a folding stock or a second handgrip.

Techstars Tuscaloosa has tapped Anastasia Simon as the program’s first Managing Director. Simon is a natural fit for the program, which will focus on supporting WaterTech and Sustainability startups. She’s been a star of the Atlanta tech ecosystem, moving from the startup to the investor side of the table. As Simon’s career has progressed, sustainability has been a “thread” throughout her tech career, she told Hypepotamus. Simon started her career in tech at SoftWear Automation, an Atlanta-based robotics startup making t-shirt manufacturing more sustainable.
