Two Baltimore County officers hospitalized after severe car crash in Dundalk

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore County Police are investigating what led up to a crash in Dundalk that put two Baltimore County officers in the hospital on Saturday.

According to police, the crash occurred near Portship and Sollers Point Road around 5 p.m.

Both the driver and passenger of the Baltimore County police cruiser were transported to a nearby hospital.

There are no other known injuries at this time.

A local eyewitness recalls the moments leading up to the crash

"I saw the cop car coming down the street with its lights on and this white car in front of him, didn't stop, didn't pull over, didn't get out of the way at all," Jayden, a bystander said.

Jayden said she wasn't sure if the Baltimore County police cruiser coming down Sollers Point Road was chasing the white car or trying to get around it when the white car made a sudden turn.

"The white car turned, wouldn't get out of the way, and turned down Portship (road) and kind of cut them off a little bit and the cop swerved," Jayden recalled.

She says that caused the cruiser to lose control, slamming into a parked SUV on Portship Road as the white car drove off.

"It was a large bang and we were like oh my god and we ran inside and told our families and the whole family came out. My cousin went over there and tried to make sure he was okay. My neighbor went over to try to make sure they were okay," said Jayden.

"It was really scary."

Firefighters and additional police officers rushed to the scene to save the two officers.

Jayden says while the officer who was in the passenger seat was able to get himself out of the cruiser, firefighters had to remove a side door and the back door of the cruiser to get the driver out.

"It just took them a while to get him out and they pulled him out on a stretcher and he got wheeled out," Jayden said. "It was really scary."

The status of their conditions are currently unknown.
