COUNTY FAIRS CONTINUING THIS WEEKEND
(OBLONG) As the Richland County Fair winds down this weekend, the Crawford County Fair in Oblong gets underway this weekend. The 4-H Horse Show is at 5:00 later this evening followed by the Open Halter Western Youth Show tomorrow morning at 10:00 and the Queen and Little Miss Pageant Saturday night at 7:00. Then various animal shows on Sunday afternoon and the Barnyard Scramble at 7:00 Sunday night. The Whippoorwill Rodeo is Monday night and after plenty of more livestock judging on Tuesday, it’s the Truck Pull Tuesday night. The 4-H Master Showmanship is Wednesday at 3:00 and Go Kart Racing that night at 7:00. The Livestock Auction is Thursday at 1:00, then the Power Wheels Demo at 6:00 and the huge Demolition Derby Thursday night at 7:00, followed by the Fair’s grand finale Demo Derby next Friday night at 7:00. THIS WEEK’S RICHLAND COUNTY FARM BUREAU RAINFALL REPORT
(OLNEY) In this week’s Richland County Farm Bureau rainfall report for the past week, with the reporting period ending at 8:00 this past Monday morning, the county’s highest total of rain was one inch & nine tenths (1.90) in Noble Township, followed by an inch & a half (1.50) in Madison Township and an inch & two tenths (1.20) in Denver Township. Then one inch & one tenth (1.10) at the Farm Bureau Office in Olney and also in both Decker and German Townships, followed by an inch even (1.00) in Preston Township and ninety-five hundredths of an inch (0.95) in both Olney and Bonpas Townships. The county’s lowest amount of rain over the past week was eight tenths (0.80) in both Claremont Township locations. Here at our WVLN-WSEI National Weather Service official weather station for Richland County, at the south edge of Olney, we recorded ninety-four hundredths (0.94).
NOBLE VILLAGE BOARD JULY 2024 MEETING RECAP
(NOBLE) The Noble Village Board met in regular session this past Monday night for less than 30 minutes. The Board : approved the payment of all bills as presented : approved the Appropriation Ordinance for Fiscal Year 2025 retroactive to May 1st, 2024, with estimated Village revenues worth $1,563,065 and Village expenditures at $1,151,135 : agreed to replace the existing sign at the Village Park Pavilion with a new one from Meagher Signs in Flora, worth $105 : noted that the Village’s new storm siren will be erected on a new pole by the Village’s Water Tower, all pending a cost estimate from Ameren : discussed a cleanup of the flower bed at the corner of North Noble Avenue & East Illinois Route 250 : noted the next Village wide Cleanup is set for Wednesday, August 21st : noted the Noble Village wide Garage Sale set for Saturday, August 17th : and noted the upcoming Noble Chowder in the Village Park, on Saturday, August 10th with three streets to be closed during the Chowder – North Noble Avenue, between Elm & Poplar Streets, plus Wildcat Street and the 100 block of East Elm Street : the next regular meeting for the Noble Village Board will be August 12th.
JASPER COUNTY EXTENSION OFFERING HUNTER SAFETY COURSE
(NEWTON) The Jasper County Extension is sponsoring a Hunter Safety course next month at the Latona Church of Christ, south of Wheeler, set for Friday night, August 16th, from 6:00 to 9:00, and the following day, on Saturday, August 17th, from 8:00 to 4:00. It’s a chance to learn, free of charge, the basic principles of safe hunting thru the State Department of Natural Resources program, as state law requires all hunters born on or after January 1st, 1980, to successfully complete such a course before they can receive a hunting license. It also includes a free lunch on Saturday, provided by White Tails Unlimited, the Embarras Eagles Chapter, plus participants have a chance to win a youth bow and a crossbow donated by the Embarras Eagles Chapter.
