Teen seriously injured in Dunkerton rollover; crash detection feature alerts authorities
DUNKERTON, Iowa — A teen is seriously hurt after a rollover crash near Dunkerton Saturday. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says the teen's cell phone alerted authorities to the crash thanks to a crash detection feature around 2:23pm Saturday in the 6000 block of North Pilot Grove Road. When first responders arrived, they found the 17-year-old in the roadway. He was rushed to UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo before transferred to University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center in Iowa City.
Oelwein couple seriously injured when three-wheeled motorcycle hit by car head-on
POSTVILLE, Iowa — An Oelwein couple is hospitalized after the three-wheeled motorbike they were riding was hit head-on by a car. It happened around 4:15pm Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Highways 18 and 52 west of Postville. The Alllamakee County Sheriff's Office says 31-yaer-old Mitchell Meyer of Dorchester swerved out of his lane to avoid a vehicle that had stopped to make a turn. Dunkerton Student Fighting for His Life
A Dunkerton High School student is fighting for his life at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a car crash on Saturday afternoon. The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says 17 year old Grant Finck’s phone initiated a crash alert to dispatchers just before 2:30 p.m. When crews arrived on scene they found that Finck’s Toyota Corolla had rolled and he had been ejected from the vehicle. He was initially taken to Allen Hospital before being transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of injuries described as life threatening.
Authorities release identity of Iowa man killed after being pinned under lawnmower
JESUP, Iowa (KCRG) — The man thatdied after being pinned under a lawnmower on Thursday was identified as a teacher with Bosco Catholic School System, KCRG reports. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said 43-year-old Jake Knepper, of Jesup, was trying to load a commercial grade lawnmower onto a trailer in the 100 block of 160th Street when the mower tipped off the side of the trailer and rolled upside down, pinning him underneath it.
Man charged with felony assault
Mason VanDamme, 22, of Oelwein was charged with felony assault after a call was received by the Oelwein Police Department from the Oelwein MercyOne Emergency Room. At around 10:09 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, VanDamme was arrested and charged with assault (willful injury) causing serious injury — Class C felony and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) 1st offense — serious misdemeanor.
Banned Player Wins Casino Jackpot, Gets Arrested
A banned Iowa player won a jackpot in a casino, despite being self-excluded. The man, who used a fake identity, was arrested, prompting an investigation into the matter. Matthew James Wessels, 43, was a self-excluded player who enrolled in the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission’s self-exclusion program in January last year. However, Wessels couldn’t resist the temptation and eventually visited Isle Hotel Casino in Waterloo, according to reports.
