Three men who allegedly stole over $2,000 worth of merchandise from a Dunkirk grocery store and then allegedly attempted to kill two state troopers while trying to get away have each been served 13-count indictments by a Calvert County grand jury.

The indictments charging the defendants — Jordan Green, 27, of Bowie, Shadeed Gregory Graham Jr., 24, of Capitol Heights, and Malik Demencio Lewis, 27, of Hagerstown — with the alleged crimes that occurred July 11 were handed down Monday.

Green, Graham and Lewis are charged with two counts each of first-degree attempted murder and second-degree attempted murder, three counts of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault, plus one count each of felony theft and conspiracy to commit theft.

Additionally, Green, who was driving the getaway vehicle, was indicted on several traffic charges, including driving on a suspended license, attempted to elude police and committing a traffic violation resulting in bodily injury.

One of the troopers, Kevin Bauer, was seriously injured when he was struck by the SUV that was being pursued by Calvert sheriff’s deputies and Maryland State Police troopers assigned to the agency’s Prince Frederick Barrack.

According to police reports, the chase began after two men were seen allegedly shoplifting at the Harris Teeter store in Dunkirk. It was learned various medicines were taken from the store.

According to charging documents filed by Detective Michael Mudd of the sheriff’s office, Bauer and Trooper Mitchell Bennett were setting up stop sticks on Harvey Road in Huntingtown.

Mudd stated the SUV allegedly tried to strike a sheriff’s office vehicle driven by Sgt. William Rector, who had followed the vehicle down Harvey Road.

“Despite the officers’ efforts, the suspect vehicle did not slow down or stop,” Mudd said. “Trooper Bauer was struck by the fleeing vehicle, thrown in the air, and his body and head broke the suspect vehicle’s windshield.”

Bennett managed to successfully dive for safety as the SUV continued on Route 4 without stopping.

Sheriff’s office Detective Wyatt McDowell, traveling in a sheriff’s office vehicle, executed a precision immobilization technique maneuver on the SUV a short distance from where Beauer was struck, bringing the chase to an end, according to police.

Bauer received medical aid at the scene and was subsequently flown to shock trauma center in Baltimore for treatment. The trooper sustained injuries to his head and had bones broken during the incident.

The day after the incident occurred, the Calvert sheriff’s office reported Bauer “was evaluated and treated” and later released.

The three suspects have been held without bond since their arrest. They will be arraigned in circuit court next Monday.

The case against Green, Graham and Lewis will be prosecuted by Christopher Monte, assistant state’s attorney.

According to court records, Lewis is being represented by private attorney John Michael McKenna while Green and Graham are being represented by the public defenders office.
