DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham could get its second social district this year at the Streets at Southpoint Mall.

The Streets of Southpoint spokesperson confirmed the open space could be the next location by the end of summer. The signs declaring this space an open container area have been installed, but are covered until the launch date.

Social district could come to downtown Mebane

Baili Heller, the spokesperson for Glass Jug Beer Lab in Bullpen, says the state law passed for social districts in 2021 has been great for business.

“It really brings a lot of people into our business and more community events to the area,” Heller said.

Heller explained visitors are able to take one the cups that say “Bullpen” and walk around the vicinity of the social district with beer, wine, or a mixed drink.

The social district in Southpoint is set to launch in August. It’s a move many Durham residents say they are looking forward to.

“It is cool to make more use of the space,” Annesh Kodali said. “It gives people more to do to increase business, hopefully.”

Said Dana Carotenuto, “Meet your friends out there. Walk around and not be confined to a certain space.”

Southpoint says the open container area will only apply to the area outside and not inside the mall.
