Lightning sparked two wildfires in the Durkee area on Wednesday morning, July 17, and the larger blaze, estimated at 3,000 acres Wednesday evening, threatened several homes and closed the Burnt River Canyon Road southwest of Durkee.

Baker County Sheriff's Office deputies went door to door to about half a dozen residences, from the Lost Dutchman Mine area along the Burnt River east toward Durkee. Structure protection was ordered, said Ashley McClay, public information officer for the sheriff's office. The area is in a Level 2 evacuation, which means be prepared to leave (Level 3 is leave immediately).
