Open house to showcase Eagle Harbor Life Saving Station
The Eagle Harbor Life Saving Station Museum is inviting the public to its open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be available. Before the U.S. Coast Guard, there was the United States Life Saving Service. The Lifesaving Service was a volunteer, and was proud of its motto: “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.” The purpose of the service was, simply, to save the lives of shipwrecked sailors.
Keweenaw County Historical Society Saves Local History in Eagle Harbor at the Lifesaving Station
Lake Superior’s reputation for stormy waters lends the need for life-saving operations around coastal towns. With the advancement of new technology and longer ranges, the U.S. Coast Guard eventually abandoned several small stations. Such as the Life Saving Station in Eagle Harbor that served the Keweenaw Peninsula from 1915 to 1950. In the years since the Keweenaw County Historical Society has taken ownership of the site, as one of its several museum sites preserving local history.
KATV celebrates anniversary
Last Saturday, the Keweenaw ATV Club celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Off-road vehicle riders rode their side-by-sides and all-terrain vehicles for the club picnic. Eagle Harbor residents and visitors enjoy 55th annual Fourth of July celebration
EAGLE HARBOR, Mich. (WLUC) - A bright and sunny morning welcomed roughly 500 residents and visitors to Eagle Harbor as it kicked off its township fourth of July celebration. This celebration has been held since 1969, for 55 years. Today’s celebration began with a parade through town, with many riding in golf carts and fire trucks, dressed up in a variety of costumes. Then, there was a costume contest before people could enjoy games in the township Ball Yard.
