MARINETTE — The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) announced Fincantieri Marinette Marine received SCA’s annual “Excellence in Safety” Award for the 2023 calendar year.

SCA, the national trade association representing the U.S. shipyard industry, honors companies with annual safety awards for the enhancement of operations and promotion of safety and accident prevention.

Through proactive approaches and dedication to improving the safety of employees, Fincantieri Marinette Marine is one of 18 shipyards to receive awards for its continued advancement of employee safety in the shipyard industry.

“The safety of our employees is a top priority, fundamental to our values and central to the success and sustainability of our industry,” said Matthew Paxton, President of SCA. “By adhering to stringent safety standards and implementing proactive measures in 2023, Fincantieri Marinette Marine has not only adapted to challenges but has also ensured the uninterrupted continuity of operations. We’re proud to recognize Fincantieri Marinette Marine and its hard working men and women for upholding the shipyard industry’s reputation and their commitment to advancing safety. Their efforts make our industry an example for others to follow.

“Our Fincantieri Marinette Marine team has demonstrated excellence and a continued commitment to working safely and taking care of our facilities, equipment, and most importantly, each other,” said Mark Vandroff, CEO of Fincantieri Marinette Marine. “We have a great team who share safety as our principal core value, and I am proud of their efforts.”

The shipbuilding industry continues to see a decrease in recordable injuries year after year, demonstrating a sharp downward trend over the past decade. This commitment to safety has allowed U.S. shipyards to adapt and address the obstacles that arose throughout the year while continuing operations.

SCA member companies are eligible for a Safety Award by submitting the SCA Injury & Illness survey for all four quarters, have zero fatalities in a single year, and either have a total recordable incident rate (TRIR) below the SCA average or if the yard reduces its year-on-year TRIR by 10 percent or more.

About SCAShipbuilders Council of America (SCA) members constitute the shipyard industrial base that builds, repairs, maintains and modernizes U.S. Navy ships and craft, U.S. Coast Guard vessels of all sizes, as well as vessels for other U.S. government agencies. The Council represents 40 companies that own and operate over 80 shipyards, with facilities on all three U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes, the inland waterways system, Alaska and Hawaii.
