Janet M. Cowherd, 91, of Cazenovia died peacefully on June 27, 2024. She was born in Hamilton, N.Y., the daughter of the late Clayton and Alberta Helmer. After high school she studied business and was employed by the Mid York Press. She met the love of her life, Robert C. Cowherd and they were married 69 years until his death on Feb. 11, 2023. They lived briefly in Syracuse and the past 69 years in Cazenovia.

Marion E. Bickford
Marion E. “Pat” Bickford passed away June 23, 2024. He was born Aug. 30, 1932, in Memphis, TN, to Marion E. and Elisabeth (Ellis) Bickford. He attended schools in Memphis until 1945, when his family moved to Winona, MN. There he attended Phelps Junior High School and Winona Senior High School, graduating in 1950. He then attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN, where he met his adored wife of 69 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Eckey Bickford, who survives him, along with their three children, Mark Bickford (Rhonda) of Ithaca, N.Y., Martha Bickford (Perry) of Louisville, KY, John Bickford (Jennifer) of St. Paul, MN and four grandchildren, Keenan Larsen, Ellis Larsen, Zoe Bickford and Simone Bickford deNoyelles. He is also survived by his sister, Elise Jorgens of Seabrook Island, SC.

However, despite rising inflation, heightened concerns due to the election year and increased operating costs, many small business owners note that they’re faring well. This confidence could point to the fact that we are on our way out of the downturn and turning the corner towards better economic conditions. In fact, according to KeyBank’s 2024 Small Business Survey, 65% of small business owners feel confident that they could fund their operating expenses with the cash they have in reserve for one month if an unexpected need arose at their business.
Joseph A. Light, 56
Joseph A. Light, 56, a lifelong resident of New Woodstock, passed away Monday, June 24, 2024. He was born March 8, 1968, in Syracuse to Alfred Joseph and Sharon Louise Cunningham Light and was a graduate of Cazenovia High School, Class of 1987. Joe was a self-employed carpenter for several years and known as a “Jack of all trades.” He was a huge Raiders fan and he enjoyed watching the New York Yankees and NASCAR – his favorite driver was Joey Logano. Joe liked spending time with his cat, “Smokey,” but the most important part of Joe’s life was being a father to Nick, Cassidy and Carlee.
The Reverend Peace-Cottage Varghese (P.V.) George, 95
The Reverend Peace-Cottage Varghese (P.V.) George, 95, of Syracuse, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024, surrounded by love. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. P.V. was born on June 29, 1928, in Ullannur, Kerala, India. He was the eldest of seven children and was predeceased by his parents and four sisters. P.V. graduated from the University of Bombay with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree and subsequently came to the United States in 1957 to study theology at Bexley Hall Seminary at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. After receiving his Master of Divinity in 1960, P.V. married Carol Hunter and they lived and served in Congregational churches in Vermont and New Hampshire for 20 years before moving to Syracuse to serve the Fairmount Community Church (UCC). P.V. was a founding member of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity and was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Syracuse until 2019.
Bennetts celebrating 50th wedding anniversary
Congratulations to Lee and Peggy Bennett of Skaneateles, who were joined in marriage June 29, 1974. A celebration with friends and family will take place June 30 at Elderberry Pong. Their three children and spouses and four grandchildren will be on hand to honor and enjoy them. Capping the celebration will be a week-long family reunion on Skaneateles Lake. Happy anniversary, Peg and Lee. We love you.

E. Clyde Ohl, 94, of Camillus, educator and community volunteer, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Born in Lock Haven, PA, to Ruth and Charles Ohl, he graduated from Lock Haven High School before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1949 to 1952. Clyde later attended Lock Haven University, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. In 1954, he moved to Syracuse to pursue a master’s degree in geography at Syracuse University.
