The dam at Lake Conestee, just south of Greenville, is getting replaced. Four years ago, a sentence like that was nigh impossible. It turns out that collective action (a.k.a. community-engaged democracy) is what got things going after years of inaction, frustration, finger pointing, and hand wringing over what to do about an antique dam holding back a passel of toxic metals flushed into the Reedy River over decades of Greenville’s Industrial Age growth.

Grant proceeds to benefit food bank
At the Monday, July 15, regular meeting of the Love County Board of Commissioners, the commissioners voted to use the proceeds of a $50,000 grant from the Southern Oklahoma Development Authority to benefit the county’s food bank. SODA had funding available to counties affected by disaster and that was made available to Love County through an Emergency Community REAP grant.
Travelers Rest approves $11.5K in accommodations tax funding: City Council notes
Here’s a recap of the July 18 meeting of Travelers Rest City Council. Approved: Accommodations Tax Committee funding recommendations. Council approved a measure that awards $11,000 in accommodations tax funds, money that is collected from taxes on hotel stays in the city, to projects or events recommended by the city’s Accommodations Tax Committee.
