Easley Police investigate mailbox tampering

EASLEY, S.C. (WSPA) – Police are looking for whomever has tampered with several mailboxes in Easley.

The mailboxes were located on Patio Road, Pearle Drive, and other streets located near Pelzer Highway.

“We have confirmed one package theft in addition to that we have not been able to specifically identify any other mail or packages that are stolen,” said Lt. Ashley Anderson, with the Easley Police Department.

Police said a resident called after taking a look at their Ring camera and seeing someone in a gray early-2000’s Nissan Altima rummaging through mailboxes.

According to investigators, tampering could be charged at a federal level.

“The theft of mail is a lower offense however the content and what anybody intends to do with it or does actually do with the mail as far as identity theft and those types of offenses and that’s where you get to your more extreme charges,” said Anderson.

The department uses a system called Flock Camera that could help identify the owner of the car.

“If it were to pass by we can search for the color, the make, and model range of that vehicle to help us narrow it down when we’re looking at those cameras,” explained Anderson. “Those cameras are also connected to several neighboring agencies around this so we would still be able to get an alert if it were to be in Greenville, Anderson, other surrounding counties and even throughout the state.”
