The Foothills-North Junior Legion Team picked up its second win of the season by shutting out East Bend on June 3.

Foothills Post 123 started strong with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, then proceeded to score multiple runs in three of the next five innings. North only allowed one hit in the 9-0 win.

Elijah Johnson earned the win on the mound for North. The right-handed pitcher struck out five batters, allowed three bases on balls, and gave up one hit in four innings pitched. North’s Jonah Adams threw the fifth inning, finishing with a pair of strikeouts and one base on balls. Ben Branch closed the game by throwing two strikeouts and four bases on balls across the final two innings.

Luke Sorrell got the start for Post 336 and, like Johnson, struck out five batters. Sorrell had one hit by pitch, four bases on balls, and allowed five runs on two hits in two innings pitched.

Jackson Swaim pitched 1/3 innings and struck out one batter, walked two, and allowed two runs on one hit. Ayden Emlinger took over on the mound in the third inning. Emlinger pitched for 1 2/3 innings, during which time he threw two strikeouts, one base on balls, one hit by pitch and allowed two runs. Emlinger was the only East Bend pitcher to not allow a run.

Shifty Mauldin closed the game for the visitors. In two innings pitched, Mauldin had one hit by pitch, and allowed two runs on four hits.

Wild pitches and passed balls proved costly for East Bend. Foothills scored five runs in the first two innings, but did so on two hits, five walks and one hit by pitch.

Beau Carson led the game off with a grounder to left field. The hit was mishandled, allowing Carson to get all the way to third base. Kyler Simmons was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners.

Simmons stole second with Kinley Stanley at the plate. When East Bend’s catcher stood up to throw, Carson darted toward the plate. Post 336 threw to the shortstop instead of second base in order to make a quick throw back to home plate, but Carson avoided the tag to score his team’s first run.

Runners were once again put on the corners after Simmons reached third and Stanley was walked. A wild pitch then scored Simmons.

North added three more runs in the second inning, all with two outs on the board. Ben Branch was walked before stealing both second and third bases, then bases were loaded after Carson and Simmons were also walked. Stanley crushed a line drive over the center fielder’s head for a 3RBI double.

East Bend put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings.

Post 336’s leadoff batter, Eli Sorrell, was walked to open Monday’s game. Post 123’s Johnson struck out the next two batters, but Eli was able to steal second and third in the process. Eli went home on a ground ball hit by Emlinger, but the inning ended with a ground out.

Carson Cranfill was walked with one out in the top of the second inning. A sacrifice bunt from Kaiden Cave moved Cranfill to second, but once again East Bend’s runner was left on base.

Foothills forced two quick ground outs in the top of the third inning before Luke Sorrell picked up his team’s only hit of the evening — a line drive to center field to earn a single. Luke became the third East Bend player to reach scoring position when he stole second on a pickoff attempt, but he too was left on base after a Johnson strikeout.

Post 336 wouldn’t return to scoring position until the sixth inning.

Post 123 piled on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bases were loaded with one out after a single from Jonah Adams, then Ashton Seal and Aiden Perkins were both walked. Post 336 picked up the inning’s second out on an infield fly, then Seal scored on a wild pitch. Bases were loaded again when Carson was walked, then Simmons was hit by a pitch to score Adams.

Foothills went scoreless in the fourth inning before adding its final two runs in the fifth. Carson got on base for the fourth time by hitting a single, then moved to third on a double from Caleb Gammons. Bases were loaded when Stanley was hit by a pitch. Carson scored on a wild pitch, then Gammons crossed the plate after a sacrifice fly from Garrett Senter.

East Bend made it back to scoring position in the sixth inning. Liam Dunn was walked before stealing second, but Foothills catcher Senter threw Dunn out stealing third.

East Bend’s best chance of scoring came in the top of the seventh inning thanks to three bases on balls. Cranfill was walked to start the inning, but was thrown out stealing second. Branch struck out the next batter before walking Swaim, then Swaim moved to second on a wild pitch before stealing third. Runners were put on the corners after Mauldin was walked.

The game ended when Senter threw Mauldin out going to second.
