Head Coach Takes Legal Action Against His Former College Football Team

Former Michigan State Spartans head coach Mel Tucker has filed a lawsuit against his former team, claiming wrongful termination.

This legal action comes nearly a year after Tucker was dismissed amid a sexual harassment scandal.

The federal lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Michigan, accuses Michigan State officials of conducting an ‘improper, sham investigation’ into the allegations against him.

Tucker alleges that the university's higher-ups have not only diminished his reputation but also engaged in racial discrimination.

The suit argues that his rights were violated, as well as the university’s own protocols, in the process of his firing.

Tucker, who was let go during the third year of his 10-year, $95 million contract, names several defendants in the lawsuit, including athletic director Alan Haller, the university itself, and the school's eight trustees.

Tucker was initially hired from Colorado with high expectations.

He led the Spartans to an impressive 11-2 record in 2021, earning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. However, the following season saw a significant decline, with the team finishing 5-7.

As this legal battle unfolds, it marks a dramatic turn in what began as a promising coaching tenure. The outcome of the lawsuit could have lasting implications for both Tucker’s career and Michigan State's athletics program.
