Vergennes mayor reveals cancer diagnosis
VERGENNES — In a Friday afternoon email to Vergennes City Council members, city department heads, city hall employees, and selectboard chairs in neighboring communities, Vergennes Mayor Chris Bearor revealed he has been diagnosed with a form of eye cancer that he said a specialist in Boston described as “very treatable.”
Solutions sought for Seymour Street flooding
The town of Middlebury will work with Danforth Pewter, the Vermont Agency of Transportation and Vermont Rail System to potentially site an emergency access across train tracks to make sure the Seymour Street neighborhood can be accessed by the community’s largest emergency response vehicles during future major flood events.

Letter to the editor: Cemetery needs a new fence
What a wonderful article in last week’s edition of the paper about the Lincoln cemeteries and the project undertaken by our library, our historical society, and the third and fourth graders at the Lincoln school! I have seen that exhibit at the historical society and recommend it. It is a wonderful example of a multigenerational project of historical significance. We need to preserve our history and learn from it.
Middlebury to host state firefighters’ convention
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department will host the Vermont State Firefighters Association 134th annual convention, slated for this Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27, in the county’s shire town. It will be an opportunity for firefighters statewide to gather, train together, socialize, elect officers and demonstrate their expertise.

Pittsford SB discusses paving, vehicles, and retirement
PITTSFORD—The Pittsford Selectboard convened for a brief regular meeting with a limited agenda on Wednesday, July 17. The board unanimously approved the sale of the town’s first responder vehicle, a 1990 Suburban, for $600. In March, the board had decided to replace the Suburban with a used Durango for an amount not to exceed $25,000. The total actual cost of the Durango was $19K.
