    Suspect Arrested In Relation to July 4th Assault in East Orange

    East Orange, NJ- Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and East Orange Police Chief Phyllis Bindi announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection with an assault that occurred during the early morning hours on July 4, 2024.

    At approximately 1:30 am, East Orange police officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of Park Avenue on reports of a disturbance. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult woman and two small children, who had all been assaulted.

    The victims were rushed to University Hospital in Newark. The adult woman and one of the children suffered life-threatening injuries. The other child is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

    An investigation by East Orange detectives with assistance from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes and Special Victims units led authorities to identify and charge Jihad Hagler, age 27, of Newark, with attempted murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

    On the evening of July 4th, Hagler was arrested by the Newark Police Department for an unrelated incident. He was then turned over to East Orange Police and Prosecutor's Office detectives to be processed on these charges. Hagler is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance in the Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) court.

    Further information concerning the victims and the nature of their injuries is being withheld to protect their identities.

    The charges against the defendants are accusations. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
