EAST PROVIDENCE − A driver died after the Jeep she was driving collided head-on with an East Providence Department of Public Works truck Thursday afternoon on Veterans Memorial Parkway , according to the East Providence Police Department.

Responding officers began treating the driver, "who had serious injuries," and she was taken by East Providence Rescue to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to Police Capt. Michael Rapoza.

A passenger in the city vehicle was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries; the driver was not injured, Rapoza said.

Mayor Bob DaSilva posted on Facebook that the Jeep SUV apparently crossed the double yellow line into the path of the truck, "striking it head-on."

"I did speak with both of our DPW employees to check on them and they are doing well," DaSilva wrote.

The name of the driver who died has not been released.

A section of Veterans Memorial Parkway was closed while police investigated the 2 p.m. crash.
