    'Crime suppression' effort in East St. LouisIllinois State Police completed a three-day operation in East St. Louis and surrounding communities that led to 15 arrests and 12 weapons recovered. ISP described the operation as a “violent crime suppression” effort in St. Clair and Madison counties.The operation led to 33 criminal charges, 19 of which were classified as felonies. ISP said more than 25 officers from around the state helped with the operation.Freight train derails A freight train derailment Thursday prompted a mandatory evacuation order for residents of Matteson.Officials said a train from the Canadian National Railway Company went off the tracks near Main Street. Photos posted to social media showed at least 10 train cars had been derailed. Officials alerted residents that they should prepare for a long-term evacuation.Metra diverted commuter trains to avoid the area. Pritzker calls for mine investigation Gov. J.B. Pritzker is calling on a federal agency to address the effects from a sinkhole that opened up in Gordon Moore Park in Alton. Wednesday's collapse didn't result in injuries, but Pritzker's office said it was caused by a previous mining operation in the area and falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Mine Safety and Health Administration. Pritzker said the residents of Madison County "deserve a thorough and well-communicated investigation."
