Serving up the Vibes: East Austin’s Best Restaurants 2023 Edition
Ingredients that make up Austin’s best restaurants. Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois & Brittany Dawn Short. Dining out in East Austin is a journey that takes Austinites through a kaleidoscope of ingredients, regions, and collaborations. But what makes a destination memorable? Often, it is the vibe spun from an indescribable combination of good conversation, mouthwatering food, and a remarkable atmosphere. After all, part of the experience of dining in a restaurant is the feeling of being far away from home, where senses are transported on rounds of conversation and flavor. But it can be difficult to strike the right balance of those essential ingredients. East Austin has more than a few places that have struck that balance and are notable for their ability to offer a good time, anytime.
Checking In at SCP Hilo Hotel
Set in the center of Hilo’s crescent-shaped bay, SCP Hilo Hotel is a modern boutique hotel reminiscent of the bygone vibes visitors often describe of the rugged Big Isle. Life moves a bit slower here and for good reason. Everyone is greeted with a smile and friendly conversation. A stay here feels like a peek inside the lives of locals and easily feels like home.
Maridad Studio Explores the Interplay Between Bodies and Objects
It’s a dark and stormy night (literally). Jennifer Pate is up late drawing. She’s craving…something. A cinnamon bun! She can’t get it out of her head, but the pantry is bare. So she lets the pen have its way. Slowly, she materializes at the center of the ooey-gooey treat, pulling away pieces of soft, glazed flesh. It’s bliss.

Floating along the Nile, the chaos of the present melts away under the desert sun as travelers take refuge in a well-appointed ship sailing the deep blue waters. The bygone era where travel felt more like an adventure feels so distant for anyone who’s recently gone through the gauntlet of trying to enjoy a modern-era vacation. Every best-kept secret is pinned on map apps, and influencers are five steps ahead in sharing the “next best thing” in travel. That sense of wonder has been replaced by a sense of urgency to experience the most of somewhere before it’s taken over. Yet, as paradoxical as it may sound, the over-discovered history in Egypt still offers a slower pace experience for those looking to escape the rat race of tourism.

Textbook images of hard-to-reach Antarctica become reality when venturing to the last frontier on Earth. From the Americas to Australia, every inch of human-occupied land is feasibly accessible to anyone able to afford a plane ticket. Isolated islands and landlocked mountain countrysides are all open to tourists looking to visit them. Plenty of people can cross off six continents on their bucket list, knowing they’ve seen the majority of the world, but south of the tip of Argentina is a sliver of rock and ice still waiting for those brave enough to see it.

Gondola-style boats, moliceiros, float tourist along calm canals brimming with brightly colored houses and art nouveau buildings in Aveiro, just a few hours’ drive north of Lisbon. The must-visit destination in Aveiro is Mosteiro de Jesus, a convent built between the 15th and 17th centuries, made famous by Joanna Princess of Portugal in the 1400s, as she lived a modest life there instead of taking her place on the throne. The structure is filled with marble, ceramics, and gilded woodcarvings certain to delight any history buff or architecture enthusiast. Aveiro’s lagoon feeds the canals, easily traversed by boat, through the old city and the new. Stop anywhere, take a stroll, and sample the local cuisine, famous for its seafood and abundant vegetarian options. Costa Nova, on the oceanside of the lagoon, is a fishing village that maintains the fish market daily and is dotted with brightly colored striped houses along the coastline.

Though the most enticing places to visit for avid travelers are typically off the well-worn path, I am going to jump right on the tourist bandwagon with this one and say that Machu Picchu tops my list. As an UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it’s no surprise this fortress in the clouds is the number one tourist attraction in South America. You don’t have to be a history buff or a llama to appreciate the panoramic views that anchor this well- preserved Incan masterpiece uniquely situated above rolling greens and rocky peaks.

Thailand is known as “The Land of Smiles.” And who wouldn’t want to travel to a place with a nickname like that? Known for its warm and welcoming culture, it has been on my bucket list since I was a child. As a kid, my first attraction to Thailand was the idea of riding an elephant. While that bucket list experience still rings true in adulthood, this gorgeous country has much more to offer!

Booking It Better: Howdy Gals
Words by Janine Stankus Photos by Baptiste Despois. For many living in the live music capital of the world, music is more than entertainment—it’s a way of life. But oftentimes, diversity can get overlooked, and this industry in particular is heavily male dominated. Luckily for Austin, there’s a rad group of gals who are looking to change that from the inside out.

The tourists are upon us! With the imminent arrival of SX 2023 comes a mass influx of out-of-towners. Top 6 Reasons to Only Eat at Food Trucks
Though the concept of food trucks (or food trailers) has been around for decades, Austin basically adopted the food truck culture early in its rise. Fast forward to 2023, we are in a golden age of mobile eats. While we can think of endless reasons to stop on the corner and grab a bite, here are our top six.
Putting the Art in Performing Arts: Steve Parker
Bringing Larger-than-Life Musical Art to Center Stage. Words by Tejal Thakkar Photos Courtesy of Steve Parker. Imagine walking up to your local park and finding a piece of art, made from salvaged materials, that you can walk through and that emits sounds reminiscent of seafaring communication, such as foghorns and cannons. Listen deliberately, as if you put a conch shell up to your ear. Steve Parker’s “Foghorn Elegy” purposely invites viewers to experience his interactive exhibit.
Try It, You’ll Like It: Try Hard Coffee
Words by Jessi Devenyns Photos by Baptiste Despois. Usually the focal point of a coffee shop is the sleek chrome of a workhorse espresso machine that intermittently roars into action as soon as a barista takes an order. At popular spots, the process can mimic an assembly line; each patron waits for the inevitable “next” as they shuffle forward to access their pick-me-up beverage. At Try Hard Coffee Roasters, the only thing that is shuffling is the song list, and, usually, this is done by a DJ.
