MADISON (WKBT) -- An Eau Claire man was convicted of wire fraud and attempting wire fraud in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.

45-year-old Robert Carter was indicted back in October 2022 with 25 counts related to wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering.

At Tuesday's trial, evidence was presented showing that between April 2020 and January 2021 Carter provided false information to semi-truck rental companies to obtain and use semi-trucks for his business, Carter Transporation Group, according to a news release.

Carter also provided false financial statements and a false wire transfer receipt along with his lease applications. Additionally, he claimed to have a multi-million-dollar trust.

Carter's sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 17. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each of the fraud counts.
