EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WKBT) -- Marshfield Clinic is suing the City of Eau Claire over property taxes.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, Marshfield Clinic says the city's 2023 assessments were "unlawful."

According to the lawsuit, the city's assessments claim that Marshfield Clinic, along with Mayo Clinic Health System, do not qualify for the Non-Profit Hospital tax exemption under Chapter 70 of state legislation.

Marshfield Clinic says they do qualify as a "a hospital of 10 beds or more devoted primarily to the diagnosis, treatment, or care of the sick, injured, or disabled."

In December 2023, the City of Eau Claire issued Marshfield property tax bills with a collective total of $690,542.87.

Marshfield Clinic says they are paying their property taxes for 2023. They hope to recover the funds through the lawsuit.
