PLAN COMMISSION RECOMMENDS PASSAGE OF REVISED SMITH HILL DEVELOPMENT
(Richmond, IN)--Numerous speakers went before the Richmond Plan Commission Wednesday night to make their cases both for and against a large proposed housing development near South 37th and Backmeyer Road. Many of the same people made the same arguments they made earlier this year, when the Plan Commission recommended approval of the zoning change only to have Common Council reject it later. Those in favor spoke Wednesday night about the need for mid-range housing and economic development. Those who opposed it feared drainage issues, increased traffic, and the use of taxpayer funds to aid the development. 98 out of 100 nearby residents who responded to a letter from the city opposed the project. In the end, the Commission voted 6-1 in favor of approval. The proposal now goes back to Common Council, which has the ultimate decision, and where the same arguments will be made for a fourth time.
